HOW TO USE AN EYEDROP

Mr. ITK brought out a tiny dirty bottle from his pocket and dropped on the table. I asked him what the challenge was and he  angrily said "doc this EYEDROP dem give me don worsen my case, see as my eye don red finish even yellow discharge don dey commot from my eyes. Na only eye dey pain me before but after I put this thing for my eyes yawa just gas for my eye".

I picked the bottle, inspected it and discovered the eye drop bottle was seriously contaminated and the tip was wider than normal. After some examinations I discovered Mr ITK's eyes were severely infected.

Doc: Mr ITK how did you open the eye drop tip?

Mr. ITK: when I remove the cover of the bottle, I use sciccors cut the tip of the bottle so EYEDROP go fit comot the bottle enter my eye since super glue pin no fit do am.

Doc: That's not the right way, if you want to open the tip, uncover the EYEDROP bottle and then cover it back but this time press the cover harder so that the pin-like structure inside the cover will Pierce the tip and open the tip.

Mr ITK: okaaaaayyy doc😱I no know o I use sciccors cut am. No wonder the EYEDROP finish before 2 days and e dey pour like open tap for my eyes.

Doc: show me how you dey take put the EYEDROP for your eyes.

Mr. ITK: haaa doc that one no hard naah. I go just sit don open my eyes, bring the bottle to my eyelash  or on top my eye, press the bottle and the drug go just travel enter my eyes and immediately I go just close dat eye, open the other one and do the same thing. But the koko be say plenty water go dey commot my eyes Sha.

Doc: hmmmmnn....Mr. ITK na you cause yourself this wahala. You infected your eyes with your EYEDROP.
Mr ITK: doc how?

Doc: I WILL TEACH YOU THE CORRECT PROCEDURE NOW!

• Wash your hands properly with soap and water then dry it.
•Read instructions and inspect the EYEDROP, checking for expiry date.
• Clean your eye area with a disposable sterile cloth or you use a clean cloth with water.
• Shake The bottle or roll between your palms to mix the contents properly.
• Open the bottle and keep the cover on a neat towel, avoid touching the tip with your hand.
• Tilt  your head backward while sitting, standing, or lying down.
•With your index finger placed on the soft spot just below the lower lid, gently pull down to form a pocket.
• Hold the bottle upside-down with the other hand, but do not squeeze yet.
• Look up to the ceiling, you should be able to see the tip of the eye dropper. Squeeze only one drop into the pocket in your lower lid.
•  Gently remove your index finger from your lower eyelid then close your eyes and lower your head.
• Don't blink, wipe your eye, or touch the tip of the bottle on your eye or face to avoid contaminating the tip and causing reinfection.
• Keep your eye closed for 3-5 minutes without blinking this is to allow absorption of the EYEDROP.
• Then OPEN YOUR 2 EYES and instill the EYEDROP into the other eye following thesame PROCEDURE.
• Before you open your eyes, gently wipe the excess eyedrops on your cheeks.
• If you have another type of EYEDROP to use at the same time, wait for 10-15 minutes after instilling the first EYEDROP to avoid the 2nd EYEDROP washing away the 1st EYEDROP.
• If you have ointments or gel to apply do so after instilling the EYEDROP not before the EYEDROP.

OPTIONAL: Gently press on the corner of your closed eyes close to the nose with your index finger and thumb for 2-3 minutes (to keep the drops from draining into your throat and getting into your mouth).

NOTE: Avoid closing one eye to instill EYEDROP into the other open eye this is to avoid excessive tearing which will wash off the EYEDROP from your eyes.

• Remove CONTACT LENS before instilling eyedrops, put back after 15 minutes.
Discard all eyedrops 4 weeks after first opening.
